Using GIMX with Sikuli

Has anyone gotten GIMX to work with Sikuli?
I am looking to automate some tasks in Yakuza on PS3 by running GIMX for the controller and then a capture card to get video to Sikuli, which has some built in image processing and OCR. I have GIMX working where I can control via keyboard and have made a few macros. Separately, I have Sikuli working where it can process the contents of the desktop and perform tasks like opening notepad and inputting some characters.
Where I am stuck is getting the keystrokes/events in Sikuli to register in GIMX. Running GIMX with debugging on, the presses don't register. I have tried using the physical device and window event modes. I am running Ubuntu 18.04. I have the official GIMX adapter.
I'm not posting in Support because I have a few more things to try, but am more asking to see if anyone has been successful before.
