Is it possible to use BT with Linux running off a disc?

Yep, i use Linux as my main OS and use GIMX with it.

Yes, you can run Ubuntu from a CD/DVD but you'd have to configure it, install GIMX etc. each time you'd wanna use it.
The best solution to use Ubuntu without having to install it permanently on your computer is getting a cheap 8-16 GB USB Flash drive and installing it on that. There's loads of tutorials on the net on how to do it if you're interested.
