Took me 2 hours to figure out the naming of the firmware files applied to the chip model on the Teensy.
guess the atmega one is for the regular old teensy 2.0.

alright, fixed. boy do I feel stupid. It would probably help if I installed the right firmware.

Not sure what's going on. My setup. Windows 7 64. I'm using a Teensy 2.0 ++ loaded with firmware EMUG29PS4 atmega32u4. Wired to a Kedsum brand (amazon) serial converter CP2102 based.
