Try making a new Windows user account, log in there, install gimx there and try again there to check if it works on new account. This sometimes works for extremely hard to trace problems with software.

No. Current gimx versions supports only atmega32u4.

You should be able to update device fw. Make sure you are using correct chips. Cpu should be atmega32u4 and double check the wiring.
