In-Depth Testing Direct Drive -w- PS4 GT Sport

Post by jseyerle »

Hi All,
I really wanted to help the community and do some in-depth testing of GMIX + Direct Drive OSW Wheel + HE Pro Pedals.
My complete setup is as follows:
Sim-Plicity 20nm Direct Drive Wheel***
HE Pro Pedals (3 pedals)***
Ricmotech Button Box
Fanatec Porsche Wheel converted to USB for Direct Drive.
*** The relevant components which might be different from configuration perspective in GIMX config if you other equipment or have yours far from the default setup you would run for something like iRacing, AC or Project Cars ***
I make no changes to my OSW software or my equipment.

Goals of mine were:
1) No shaking of wheel when not held or lightly held on straights
2) Run without traction control as I find it is the fastest way in GT Sport
3) No brake locking unless I really brake late with more pressure than normal braking
4) No losing rear-end with over sensitive gas input unless I really have wheel turned to an extreme and give more than 50% throttle
5) Have FFB input to let me know early enough to correct

Testing Scenario:
Track: Dragon Seaside
Time: Late Afternoon
Car: Porsche 911 with no aids, TC on 0
Gimx Emulation: G29 PS4

What I learned which impact my recommendations below:
1) Goal 1 is only possible if within Gimx-config you put Overall->FFB Tweaks->Constant to 0-1 but if you run such low values you have no resistance in the wheel
2) Damper in the same menu location of 1) doesnt seem to dso anything. I tried all extremes of values 0-100-300 and it didnt seem to have an impact at all
3) Spring in same menu location of 1) will make the steering feel gummy, rubber bandy so I kept it a lower value and still might try taking it down from my present setting
4) The gimx calculator for determining curve or input for acceleation and sensitivity in the menu location Axis doesnt really translate for the direct drive wheel or the pedals. I tried numerous settings to get a nice curve from 0 to 100% but the gas, brake and wheel never relly behaved how the curve would make me expect. This hit and miss testing was importtant for Goal 2,3,4
5) Within GT Sport FFB settings it is best to keep them all at lowest value except FFB sensitivity, which impacts the feel of road

Results:
Goal 1 - Not achieved but happy with result. Wheel only will shake if I let go, which I never do. In the straights I can hold it lightly and get no shaking.
Goal 2 - Achieved
Goal 3 - Achieved
Goal 4 - Achieved

Settings:
Gimx-Config->Axis
- Wheel (Deadzone 0, Sensitivity 0.0039, Acceleration 0.95)
* That gives me nice even turning and I only goto the extreme left or right in hairpin turns
- Brake (Deadzone 0, Sensitivity 0.0065, Acceleration 1.0075)
* That gives me nice brake control. I can trail-brake, I can late brake and lock up when I want with the end of the axis
-Gas (Deadzone 0, Sensitivity 0.0065, Acceleration 1.0055)
* I can run 0 traction control, I can use all length of throttle and only hit full throttle at near end of axis
-Clutch defaults from when you set it up in gimx-config

Gimx-config->Overall->FFB Tweaks
Rumble=100
Constant=70
Spring=20
Damper=0

GT Sport In-Game settings
-Controller sensitivity at lowest -2
-FFB Torgue at lowest 1
-FFB Senstivity at 5
* I could not tell a difference between 5 and 10

Regarding the FFB tweaks, the result depends on the game. Some games use constant+spring+damper effects, some others use constant+spring effects, and some others only use only the constant effect.

A way to check the effects used played is to enable debug output with haptic checked (but it is really verbose and not so easy to understand).
