Thanks for the reply!

Using the pi 3 model B.

Updated firmware to current version. Doesn't seem to have changed much, if anything the problem got a little worse. Tried the command line you wrote, no change versus running as a service.

I have ordered a couple of pro micro avr boards to try to hook things up like the rudi tutorial. If all else fails I'll pick up a fast sbc.

Thanks,
-Mike

Do you use Ethernet? You may also try to run GIMX with no Ethernet since the controller is connected to the USB bus.

No Ethernet connected during play. Do I need to disable eth0?

You may try. I don't think it will make a difference.

Try disabling wifi and Bluetooth

Radios can cause wierd lag in systems sometimes.

I haven't tried the Pi just yet with this. Need to update my pi first, it won't even run gimx with its current software.

Is the Pi TTL 5v Btw?

An option could be using a x86 based sbc with a stripped down windows build. As much as I hate windows when it comes to gaming hardware it may have better support than Linux.
