GND -> blue wire -> GND = OK
Rx -> gray wire -> D2 = NOK
Tx -> red (?) wire -> D3 = NOK
You have to invert the connectors for D2 & D3.

Thanks again matlo one thing though, last night when i finally got it working everything was fine but ive tried it again today and i am having some trouble, my controls have gone strange, only a few keys work on my keyboard and my mouse is taking control over the keyboard(wsda) when i am on the ps3 xmb, i have checked the configs everything looks good nothing seems to have changed since last night.
any suggestions?

Just enable Ouput>GUI before starting emuclient.
You'll see if your controls are working or not.
If some controls are working and others not working, this means you have a configuration issue that you have to fix using gimx-config or gimx-fpsconfig.

gui output controls work fine i am using the same config last night which worked fine but now the controls are not working. i have been using wsda for navigation in ps3 menu as usual but the mouse moves the wsda keys and the keyboard doesnt work but sometimes it works alittle but acts faulty, but the point is the config i was using last night is the same config i am using now so it doesnt seem a config problem.
Could the atmega board be faulty? because it worked perfectly last night have not changed a thing. moving the mouse shoots through the menu erratically and selects things. sumtimes d key acts like a enter and back key.

In case of control glitch, try this:
stop emuclient, unplug the cable from the ps3, replug it, and restart emuclient
If the problem reappears, it means there is an issue with the serial connection.
Another good test is to try with Ubuntu.
